Overdue

A few months ago Ryan decided he wanted no part of sleeping in his crib anymore. He would go to bed better if I let him lay on his floor with a blanket and eventually we put his crib mattress on the floor in Jack's room and tried that. I was pleased that the setup seemed to be working and Ryan still took good naps even though he had this new freedom. I'd never taken the crib down before since the baby using it would stay in it until it was needed again, but we need the space so down it came and all the toys went into the new playroom and the boys share a room; Jack in his bed and Ryan in a toddler bed we're borrowing that his Uncle Jon made.

He loves setting up his toys all around him before he goes to sleep. And of course he loves jumping and being naughty when I warn him he's going to get hurt!

But while we made the transition to a bed, Ryan was still very much attached to his beloved blanket. I've mentioned it before--it's a blanket JP's mom made for him when he was a baby, Jack used it, and now Ryan has loved it to shreds.

It was long overdue that he shouldn't be sleeping with it anymore--it was disgusting and dangerous since he could get all twisted up. I decided to take some scissors to it and I cut the two least damaged corners and sewed him some small blankets he could cuddle with. He watched me do it and thought it was a fine idea until it came time for his nap in the afternoon. He kept asking for his old blanket but I said it was broken. He never took a nap that first day and I can't remember the last time he missed one altogether. That night he complained some more and asked for the old blanket, but he slept good and we seem to be in the clear since a few days have passed. We'll see how long these corner blankets last now!

In other milestone news, Jack had his five-year checkup with the pediatrician the other day and we learned he weighs 31.5 pounds--the same weight as his four-year checkup when he was a couple inches shorter. I knew he was small, but I didn't realize he wasn't gaining any weight so we're on a mission to do just that. He's picky but does okay at mealtime so I'm just trying to get him to drink more milk and eat healthy snacks between meals. We'll go back in a few months to see if he's gained anything. I let him bring his DS as a bribe to be brave for his shots, which he was. Ready or not, time for kindergarten this fall!

Disneyland

So we woke up early the Sunday morning we left for Disneyland and hit the road. We made good time despite the 30 minute detour we took after unknowingly taking the wrong exit and still made the trip in under 6 hours. We headed right to the park and chose the jungle cruise for our first ride. Not too scary like Pirates of the Carribean from Jack's first trip a few years back. I'm pretty sure Ryan thought most the animals we saw were real. Both boys loved it and I'm sure JP was laughing at them and not the river boat pilot's jokes.

Ryan loved the teacups and cried when we got off. I can't think of a ride he didn't enjoy, but he wasn't a fan of the lines. It wasn't even the waiting that bothered him, but the anticipation as we got closer and seeing other people load into their car or boat was hard for him. Patience isn't his strong suit and he would yell, "my boat, my boat!" when we were still about 20 people back.

The crowds were a little heavier than we've been used since our history of going in January during the week, but the perfect weather probably had something to do with it. It was so nice and the boys wore shorts the whole stay. We even went to the hotel pool one morning, but stuck with the hot tub since it was still pretty early in the day.

Everyone slept good at night after our full days of walking and having fun. We'd leave the park for dinner each evening and if I could convince these party poopers, we'd go back for round two.

Jack wore a "Happy Birthday" pin with his name on it and most the employees on the rides would notice and say something and call him by name. He secretly loved the attention and made the comment on our second day there that no one had said Happy Birthday to him yet. We thought it was cute and laughed, but that upset the birthday boy!

Having fun in Toon Town (sorry for the blurry photos--something was off with a camera setting)

Ryan wanted nothing to do with any characters we saw and Jack was willing to pose for pictures, but I had to laugh at how tense he looks in most of them. There was a lot of nervous/excited tongue curling that week (see photo above too)!

This is what would happen if we did go back to the park after dark--just too much fun for one day.

Overall, it was a pretty fun trip. We could have just taken our boys to the Lego store in Downtown Disney and skipped the theme park altogether and they still would have been in heaven. On our next trip in a couple years, we'll definitely have to visit Legoland.
